Building Sarathi: Moving from Content Overload to Assurance-Driven Learning

A 3-day hackathon journey of building a guided learning platform where progress is earned, not skimmed

The Spark: Students Don't Fail to Learn, They Fail to Navigate

In today's world, content is abundant. Whether it's YouTube tutorials, documentation, or online courses, anyone with an internet connection can access world-class educational material. Yet thousands of eager students drop out of self-learning every single day.

Why?

Because students don't fail because they can't learn—they fail because they don't know what to do next.

When you're starting out, especially in tech ecosystems like Nepal where structured guidance and career counseling are scarce, you're hit with tutorial paralysis. You jump from one video to another without knowing if you're actually building real-world competence.

This problem led our team—Samir Shrestha, Diperson Shrestha, Prakriti Sapkota, and Nir Singh—to build Sarathi during TechSprint, a 3-day hackathon.

Introducing Sarathi: The Guided Learning System

Sarathi (meaning "Guide" or "Charioteer") is a platform built to shift education from content-driven learning to assurance-driven learning.

Instead of dumping 50 hours of video lectures on a student, Sarathi introduces a closed learning loop:

The Two Pillars:

Curated & Visual Roadmaps: Giving learners a clear, step-by-step path from zero to job-ready skills, eliminating the guesswork.
Mandatory Mentor Validation: Learners can't just click "Mark as Done." They must submit proof of work (projects, code, assignments), which is reviewed and verified by an experienced mentor.

Progress is earned, not skimmed. Students only advance when their practical understanding has been verified.

What We Built in 72 Hours (The MVP)

Entering a 3-day hackathon with ambitious ideas meant we had to move fast and prioritize clarity over feature bloat. During the sprint, we built and demoed a functional end-to-end MVP:

🗺️ Dynamic Roadmap Progression: Interactive visual paths where learners track milestones and see exactly where they stand.
🧑‍🏫 Mentor Review Dashboard: A dedicated space for mentors to inspect submissions, provide targeted feedback, and approve progression.
💼 Verified Talent Pool: A showcase where verified student portfolios and completed roadmaps can be discovered by recruiters and hiring companies.
⚡ Role-Based Authentication & Workflows: Distinct, streamlined user flows for Students, Mentors, and Administrators.

The Tech Stack Under the Hood

Framework: Next.js (App Router, Server Actions) & React
Database & ORM: MongoDB with Mongoose
Interactive UI & Motion: Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion, and @dnd-kit for drag-and-drop roadmap architecture
Media & Storage: Cloudinary for seamless project asset handling

Validating the Problem: 65%+ Willingness to Pay

Building software is only half the battle; ensuring someone actually needs it is the other.

During the hackathon, our team went out and conducted a targeted survey among students and early-career learners. The results were eye-opening:

Over 65% of respondents stated they would actively pay for structured, mentor-backed guidance over free, unguided tutorials.

This confirmed our hypothesis: learners value accountability, clarity, and personalized feedback far more than just having access to another playlist of videos.

Our First Hackathon: What We Took Away

TechSprint was a milestone for our entire team—it was everyone's very first hackathon.

We didn't take home the trophy, but what we gained over those 3 days was invaluable:

Shipping under pressure: Translating a raw concept into a working full-stack prototype in 72 hours taught us rapid prioritization and teamwork.
Product thinking over pure coding: Focusing on user validation and market demand shaped Sarathi into a viable product concept rather than just a weekend code experiment.
The power of a cohesive team: Huge shoutout to my amazing teammates Samir, Diperson, and Prakriti—the late nights, debugging marathons, and collaborative energy made this experience unforgettable.

What's Next for Sarathi?

Sarathi is designed to scale with reusable roadmaps and community-driven mentorship models.

Our vision is to continue refining the platform so that every student—regardless of background or network—has a dedicated Sarathi guiding them toward real, verifiable career skills.
